The Aircraft Accidents and Incidents Investigation Department (AAIID)
The Department was established in 2021 under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development (MOTID), in accordance with the standards and recommended practices set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

In fulfilment of Zimbabwe’s obligations as a signatory to the Chicago Convention, the Department was established to investigate aircraft accidents and incidents, with the primary objective of enhancing aviation safety.
The AAIID’s mandate is governed by the Civil Aviation Act [CAP 13:16] and its functions are guided by the provisions of ICAO Annex 13, as domesticated in the Civil Aviation (Accident and Incident Investigations) Regulations, 2018. The Department is committed to conducting investigations with diligence, integrity, and transparency, in accordance with international best practices and standards.
By investigating aircraft accidents and incidents, the AAIID aims to identify causal factors, contributing circumstances, and safety deficiencies, and to make recommendations to improve aviation safety, thereby reducing the risk of future accidents and incidents. The Department’s work is critical to maintaining the safety and integrity of Zimbabwe’s aviation system, and to promoting public confidence in air travel.

Key Functions.
- Investigation and Analysis: Thoroughly investigate air accidents and incidents to determine contributing factors. Employ advanced forensic techniques and data analysis to reconstruct events accurately.
- Safety Recommendations: Formulate comprehensive safety recommendations based on investigation findings. Collaborate with regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders to implement safety enhancements.
- Preventive Measures: Identify systemic issues and contribute to the development of preventive measures. Promote best practices and knowledge-sharing within the aviation industry.
- International Collaboration: Foster collaboration with global aviation organizations and investigative bodies. Share insights and lessons learned to enhance international aviation safety standards.
OUR MANDATE
- 1.To investigate and determine the causes of all aircraft occurrences (accidents and serious incidents) and to report thereon to the Minister;
- To recommend to the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe and the Minister regarding measures for preventing and dealing with occurrences;
- To ensure the proper co-ordination of measures to prevent and deal with aircraft occurrences;
- To conduct such inspections and carry out such investigations as may be necessary or desirable to ensure that measures for preventing and dealing with aircraft occurrences are being implemented;
- To co-operate with authorities and agencies within and outside Zimbabwe in the exercise of functions of the Department;
- 6.To perform such other functions as may be prescribed.
