The  AAIID was established in 2021 under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development (MOTID), in accordance with the standards and recommended practices set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). In fulfilment of Zimbabwe’s obligations as a signatory to the Chicago Convention, the Department was established to investigate aircraft accidents and incidents, with the primary objective of enhancing aviation safety.

Mandate:

The AAIID's mandate is governed by the Civil Aviation Act [CAP 13:16] and its functions are guided by the provisions of ICAO Annex 13, as domesticated in the Civil Aviation (Accident and Incident Investigations) Regulations, 2018. The Department is committed to conducting investigations with diligence, integrity, and transparency, in accordance with international best practices and standards.

To be a leading authority in aircraft accident and incident investigation, enhancing aviation safety and protecting the aviation community through independent, impartial, and professional investigations.

We are dedicated to conducting thorough aircraft accidents and incidents investigations, determining causes, and making recommendations to prevent recurrence, promoting a safer aviation environment in Zimbabwe and contributing to global aviation safety.
